Fine performances from Fishguard five

FIVE swimmers from Fishguard Flyers returned from this year’s Tiger Bay Open Gala with six medals, with two speeding tickets and lots of personal best times.

The gala, held at the Cardiff International Pool on March 18 and 19, has become a firm favourite with the club’s younger swimmers, who were desperate to capture the ultimate prize of a ‘speeding ticket’.

These are given to competitors who clock times faster than the meet’s upper cut off mark - pretty fast.

Victoria Horne, aged 9, bagged two to stick on her bedroom wall - as rewards for her speedy 50m and 100m freestyle, notching greta times of 38.41 seconds and 1:28.57 respectively.

She added a gold medal in the 50m backstroke and bronze in the 50m fly to her impressive collection.

Sammy Montgomery, 9, also grabbed gold in the 100m backstroke in 1:43.04 and bronze in the 200m individual medley (IM), which involves all four strokes in one race, with an excellent time of 3:58.28.

Zac West, 10, secured silver and bronze for great swims in the 200m and 50m backstroke respectively. He also grabbed a fourth spot in the 200m IM, with a blistering time of 3:17.12.

Kayleigh Fischer, 11, produced impressive swims in the 100m and 200m breaststroke - slashing more than 20 seconds off her previous best time in the 200m distance to touch in 3:36.06.

Alexa Horne, 10, produced a solid 200 IM swim to knock more than 9 seconds off her time to hit the wall in 3:47.53. The young Flyer also cut 6.5 seconds off her previous 50m freestyle time to romp home in 40.30 seconds.
