SEVEN north Pembrokeshire beaches have scooped honours in the Coast Awards with three of the beaches winning the coveted Blue Flag.

The Coast Awards, which recognise beaches with good quality bathing water and facilities, have announced the winners of the Blue Flag, Green Coast and Seaside awards with Newgale, Whitesands and Poppit Sands all being awarded Blue Flags and Seaside Awards.

Abereiddy and Cwm yr Eglwys beaches won Green Coast awards while Goodwick and Newport both won Seaside Awards.

The Blue Flag and Green Coast awards rate beaches based on water quality, facilities for beach users and for demonstrating good management and safety provision, while the Seaside Awards also recognise beaches with good public facilities, water quality, safety provision and management.

The seven north Pembrokeshire beaches recognised are amongst 32 beaches in Pembrokeshire to have received at least one of the awards with 12 Pembrokeshire beaches in total receiving the prestigious Blue Flag.

Lesley Griffiths, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for environment and rural affairs, said: “We all know Wales has some of the most stunning coastline anywhere in the world. Our beaches and coastal areas have long been a magnet for visitors from far and wide as well as being hugely popular with local communities."
