LLECHRYD kept their hopes of promotion alive within the Pembrokeshire League division two as they notched a winning draw over Llanrhian - but their chances of catching runaway leaders Llangwm were thwarted by some dogged batting from the Llanrhian tail enders.
The Teifisiders looked set for maximum points with their opponents in trouble with seven wickets down and well off the run rate required, but a match saving knock by Richard Reed ultimately earned his team a losing draw.
Llechryd, who welcomed big hitting John Curran back to the fold, made a decent start with Curran hitting a brisk 55, and fellow all-rounder Mike Carter adding 32. Leighton O’Connor chipped in with 27 not out, Ollie Roberts with 35 and James Betterley with 22 to help them reach a promising total of 212 for 6.
Jack Jones was the pick of the Llanrhian bowlers with 5 wickets for 72, and had excellent backing from Mathew Bennet with 1 for 47.
The hosts started positively in their run chase, with Ben Jones hitting 20 and opening partner Jack Jones making 25, before wickets started to tumble, with opening bowlers Graham Keen (2 for 47) and veteran Peter Betterley (3 for 23) finding excellent line and length.
Skipper Reed, however, held the team together with a patient knock of 64 not out, which included 10 boundaries, and despite the best efforts of medium pacer O’Connor and Curran (3 for 22) the visitors were unable to nail the last two wickets they required for victory as Llanrhian finished on 136 for 8.
• Llanrhian Seconds fell well short of their winning target in their division three match against Herbrandston as they were all out for just 71 in their chase of 215 for victory.
The home batsmen had taken charge with good knocks from Jack Nicholas (82), Robert Kingston (61) and Steve John (36) before they were all out for 214, with wickets falling to Rob John (3 for 19) and Llyr Williams (3 for 8).
In reply, Fraser Watson finished on 21 not out, and Ieuan Jones made 19, but Robert Kingston (2 for 10), Paul Nicholas (4 for 18) and Robert Hood (2 for 14) skittled them out.
• Llechryd Seconds closed the gap on division four leaders Narberth Seconds after they completed a four-wicket win over the Otters.
Josh Ward led the way with a superb innings of 86, which included 13 boundaries, to help steer his team to victory at 199 for 6. Luke Palmer Davies added 28 and talented teen Joe Mansfield crafted a fine innings of 28 all out.
The visitors, who were well served by Emyr Jenkins, who hit 69 not out, and Llew Jones, who carried his bat for 52, had earlier posted a total of 197 for 4 for Llechryd to chase.
• Crymych meanwhile eased to victory by nine wickets after dismissing Saundersfoot Seconds for a meagre total of just 38 all out.
Sam Kurtz sealed victory with 31 not out, having also had a return of 4 wickets for 18.
Rhodri Lewis also claimed 3 wickets for 10 and Richard Davies 2 for 3 for the Preseli men.
