THE annual Stena Line Mixed Pairs bowls tournament took place on Thursday as players from across Pembrokeshire and south Ceredigion took to the green.
For a change, it was dry for all the games, although a strong win made for some interesting play.
This weather, together with only six ends being played per game ensured that those pairs who excelled at the basics of the game – drawing to the jack – progressed to the finals.
The eventual winners of the Stena Line trophy were Cally Jones and Andrew Evans of Whitland BC. The runners-up were Sara and James John Davies of Haverfordwest.
Winners of the Plate were Clare Mitchell and Andrew Wilson of Cardigan.
Fishguard & Goodwick’s Evelyn Hughes and Bernard Williams pushed the duo close as they settled for second.
The feedback given by the players after the end of play was that the one-day format, introduced this year by organiser Alan Newbery, was successful.
With that in mind, organisers have agreed to repeat that style of tournament for next year’s competition, which has been pencilled in for 2 August.
Organisers also thanked sponsors Stena Line, without whom, they said, the event would not be viable.
